England Leeds Mission Update

Dear Missionary (Family Members & Leaders),

Usually the first day of April is full of pranks and good-natured jokes.  This year, the coronavirus is all of the mischief and trouble we can handle.  Thankfully, the Lord is at the helm and will continue to direct us during this difficult season.

Early this morning, we received additional missionary information from the leaders of the Church.  You can find the letter here - https://newsroom.churchofjesuschrist.org/article/service-options-missionaries-march-31-2020

As previously stated, the missionaries in Europe and the UK will remain in place and continue to serve.  Despite the challenges of isolation, we are committed to our purpose – “Invite others to come unto Christ by helping them receive the restored gospel through faith in Jesus Christ and His Atonement, repentance, baptism receiving the gift of the Holy Ghost His Atonement, repentance, baptism, receiving the gift of the Holy Ghost, and enduring to the end”.  (Preach My Gospel, page 1)

The Lord is blessing us and we are finding ways to reach out to others by using technology.  We will be adding more data to all of our devices.  We are busy trying to prepare for what the Lord needs us to do.

Attached is a lengthy article about the coronavirus.  It is an interesting look at the science behind the pandemic.  It helps explain why the current procedures are starting to slow the growth of the virus. Please continue to be vigilant.  Don't let your guard down.

We join with you in preparing for conference and look forward to hearing from the Lord's prophets and apostles.

Thank you for your continued service.

President,

Forgive me that this is such a long note. It contains some information to help put this contagion into perspective once again.

I have received no new information of any missionaries in the UK with symptoms suggesting COVID-19. I trust you are telling me of these since SLC MM is keeping a list.

There are, as of 0600 on 30 March, 715,660 documented cases of COVID-19 worldwide and 33,579 deaths. There are 359,102 cases in Europe and the UK. There are 124,665 cases in the USA the single nation with the most cases.

There are 19,522 cases in the UK with 2,433 new cases. The good news here is that the total number of daily new cases as decreased over the past two days. Let us pray that is a trend that will continue. There are no areas in the UK or Ireland that do not have cases or risk.

The number of new cases in the Far East and Southeast Asia continue to remain low demonstrating that the spread of the virus can be controlled. Germany continues to see an exponential rise in case numbers while the mortality rate continues below 1%, demonstrating that the mortality rate can be maintained so long as the system is not overwhelmed.

As the numbers of cases in the British Isles continue to rise exponentially some information about the virus that can be very helpful is available from Johns Hopkins University Medical School and Hospital. This was interesting and informative enough to me that I thought to pass it on to you would be worthwhile. I am sure that you already know this but, it does provide interesting data and guidance.

The following information about coronavirus is from Johns Hopkins University Hospital:

Great info and precautions to take and why!

“The virus is not a living organism, but a protein molecule (DNA) covered by a protective shell of lipid (fat), which, when absorbed by the cells of the eyes, nose or mouth mucosa, changes their genetic code. (mutation) and converts them into aggressor and multiplier cells.

* Since the virus is not a living organism but a protein molecule, it is not killed, but decays on its own. The disintegration time depends on the temperature, humidity and type of material where it lies.

* The virus is actually very fragile; the only thing that protects it is a thin outer layer of fat. That is why any soap or detergent is the best remedy, because the foam CUTS the FAT (that is why you have to rub so much: for 20 seconds or more, to make a lot of foam).

By dissolving the fat layer, the protein molecule disperses and breaks down on its own.

* HEAT melts fat; this is why it is so good to use hot water (above 25 degrees Celsius) for washing hands, clothes and everything. In addition, hot water makes more foam and that makes it even more effective.

* Alcohol or any mixture with alcohol over 65% DISSOLVES ANY FAT, especially the external lipid layer of the virus.

* Any solution with 1-part bleach and 5-parts water directly dissolves the protein, breaks it down from the inside.

* Oxygenated water (H2O2) helps long after soap, alcohol and chlorine, because peroxide dissolves the virus protein, but you have to use it pure and it hurts your skin.

* NO BACTERICIDE OR ANTIBIOTIC WORKS. The virus is not a living organism like bacteria; antibiotics cannot kill what is not alive.

* NEVER shake used or unused clothing, sheets or cloth.

The life of the virus that is its viability on various surfaces is estimated to be as follows:

- 3 hours (fabric and porous surfaces),

- 4 hours (copper and wood)

- 24 hours (cardboard),

- 42 hours (metal) and

- 72 hours (plastic).

But if you shake it or use a feather duster, the virus molecules float in the air for up to 3 hours, and can lodge in your nose.

* The virus molecules remain very stable in external cold, or artificial cold ( as in air conditioners in houses and cars.)

* Moisture and darkness foster the stability of the virus. Therefore, dehumidified, dry, warm and bright environments will degrade it faster.

* UV LIGHT on any object that may contain it breaks down the virus protein. UV light can disinfect face masks. Be careful, UV light also breaks down collagen (which is protein) in the skin.

* The virus CANNOT go through healthy skin.

* Vinegar is NOT useful because it does not break down the protective layer of fat.%.

* LISTERINE can work > It is 65% alcohol.

* The more confined the space, the more concentration of the virus there can be. The more open or naturally ventilated, the less.

* You must wash your hands before and after touching mucosa (mouth nose or eyes), food, locks, knobs, switches, TV remote control, cell phone, watches, computers, desks, TV, etc. And when using the bathroom.

* You have to MOISTURIZE HANDS after so much washing, because the molecules can hide in micro cracks. The thicker the moisturizer, the better.

* Also keep your NAILS SHORT so that the virus does not hide there.

This is from an immunologist at Johns Hopkins University.

Feeling confused as to why Coronavirus is a bigger deal than Seasonal flu? Here it is in a nutshell. I hope this helps. Feel free to share this to others who don’t understand… It has to do with RNA sequencing.... i.e. genetics.

Seasonal flu is an “all human virus”. The DNA/RNA chains that make up the virus are recognized by the human immune system. This means that your body has some immunity to it before it comes around each year... you get immunity two ways...through exposure to a virus, or by getting a flu shot.

Novel viruses, come from animals.... WHO tracks novel viruses in animals, (sometimes for years watching for mutations). Usually these viruses only transfer from animal to animal (pigs in the case of H1N1) (birds in the case of the Spanish flu, which was also H1N1). But once, one of these animal viruses mutates, and starts to transfer from animals to humans... then there is a problem, Why?

Because we have no natural or acquired immunity. The RNA sequencing of the genes inside the virus is not human, and the human immune system does not recognize it so, we cannot fight it off because we have no prior experience with it.

Now.... sometimes, the mutation only allows transfer from animal to human, for years it’s only transmission is from an infected animal to a human before it finally mutates so that it can now transfer human to human... once that happens, we have a new contagion phase. And depending on the fashion of this new mutation, that is what decides how contagious, or how deadly it is going to be.

H1N1 was deadly.... but it did not mutate in a way that was as deadly as the 1918 Spanish flu. Its RNA was slower to mutate and it attacked its host differently, too.

Fast forward.

Now, here comes this novel coronavirus... it existed in animals only, nobody knows for how long… but one day, at an animal market, in Wuhan China, in December 2019, it mutated and made the jump from animal (possibly bats) to people. At first, only animals could give it to a person... But here is the scary part.... in just TWO WEEKS it mutated again and gained the ability to jump from human to human. Scientists call this quick ability, “slippery”

This Coronavirus, not being in any form a “human” virus (whereas we would all have some natural or acquired immunity), took off like a rocket. And this was because, humans have no natural immunity...doctors have no known medicines for it either.

And it just so happens that this particular mutated animal virus, changed itself in such a way the way that it causes great damage to human lungs..

That is why Coronavirus is different from seasonal flu, or H1N1 or any other type of influenza.... This one is slippery AF. And it is a lung eater...And, it has already mutated AGAIN, so that we now have two strains to deal with, strain s, and strain L....which makes it twice as hard to develop a vaccine.

We really have no tools in our shed, for this. History has shown that fast and immediate closings of public places has helped in the past pandemics. Philadelphia and Baltimore were reluctant to close events in 1918 and they were the hardest hit in the US during the Spanish Flu.

Factoid: Henry VIII stayed in his room and allowed no one near him, till the Black Plague passed… (honestly...I understand him so much better now). Just like us, he had no tools in his shed, except social isolation...

And let us end by saying.... right now, it is hitting older people harder... but this genome is so slippery...if it mutates again (and it likely will). Who is to say, what it will do next.

Be smart folks... acting like you are unafraid is so not very smart right now.

Stay home folks... and share this to those that just are not catching on.

To add to all the things we can do, we must realize that in this situation the greatest protection we can have is from the hand of the Lord. Our faith, just like that in ancient Israel when they painted the door posts and lintels of their homes with the blood of the slain lamb, will sustain us through this deadly peril.

I hope this is of some help to you all. May the God of Israel protect His people, His modern army of Israel and all those who believe on Him or seek so to do.

With love,

Elder Done
